Big Ad Spending Disparity Helps Rispone Win Second Slot In La Gov Runoff

The Erika Jayne “Transfers” & The Tom Girardi Bankruptcy Explained with Attorney David M. Goodrich

WASHINGTON Businessman Eddie Rispone is the GOP’s standard-bearer in the Lousiana governor’s race after Republicans kept incumbent Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards under 50 percent on Saturday. And Rispone punched that ticket thanks in no small part to a massive spending edge over Republican Rep. Ralph Abraham.

Edwards was the clear leader with 47 percent of the vote. Rispone finished with 27 percent, followed by Abraham’s 24 percent.

Rispone’s camp spent $8.1 million ahead of Saturday’s “jungle primary,” about as much as Edwards’ campaign did and significantly more than the $2 million spent by Abraham. And a healthy chunk of that money went to blistering attacks on Edwards, particularly in the final days.

Out of the $672,000 Rispone spent in the final seven days of the race, more than a third of that was spent on attack ads targeting Abraham, according to data from the media-tracking firm Advertising Analytics.

Abraham, by comparison, tried to frame himself as above the fray in the final days. His campaign ran $157,000 worth of ads down that same stretch, the vast majority on a spot that framed him as the candidate who “rose above it all” despite the “noise and negative campaigning.”

If the Democrat had won the majority of votes on Saturday, he’d win re-election outright. But instead, he now has to face Rispone in a runoff next month.

War Stories From My Office

Interestingly, I have had a few clients who have actually made money by filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. One particular client had recently lost his co-op in the Bronx, which was valued at $350,000. He was behind on his maintenance fees because he lost his job so the co-op association moved to foreclose on his apartment. My client was not able to sell the apartment so he was about to lose everything. Now the important factor here was that the stock for his co-op had not officially changed hands yet. Aside from the co-op maintenance owed, he had a $15,000 mortgage and some credit card debt. He had over $100,000 in equity! Immediately, we filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy to stop the shares from changing hands, the trustee was able to pay off all of his debts and it looks like he will get about $60,000 back from his Chapter 7 case! This is not a typical result but it illustrates how if money is left over after paying off debts in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy this money will go back to the debtor.

What you should get out of all of this is that bankruptcy is not the end but a way to start over. The road to success is often a bumpy one and bankruptcy is just one of those bumps.

Steyer Poised To Make Debate Stage Debut

The disconnect could become concerning for voters as they consider which candidate to support in the caucuses because some doubt that Steyer will be able to expand beyond the issues that hes invested in.

He already had Next Gen out doing advocacy for the environment, and then he decided to say is a fraud. He riled up his Next Gen audience, so he already has that support cooked in, and thats what youre seeing right now, Tony Currin of Johnson County told NBC News.

Others, including 68-year-old Al McGaffin a retired teacher in Iowa who attended a meet-and-greet with the candidate, say Steyer has no problem connecting with audiences and would bring a fresh perspective to the presidency.

His expertise, his ability to understand economics, his ability to understand people and the world, I think he can handle it, I think hes got the experience, McGaffin said.

Still, Steyer acknowledges he still has much to learn.

You don’t start at the finish line. The process is super important. Youve got to think about the processes being a learning experience, Steyer said. And that learning experience is important and not threatening.

I’ll try and say what I think try to be myself and try to present myself as a different candidate from everybody else, which is true, and try and be straightforward about it. Steyer said. It’s really introducing myself and honestly, that’s how I see it.

The Epic Hypocrisy Of Tom Steyer

Business News, 16 May 2014

Billionaire hedge fund operator and green energy magnate Tom Steyer has pledged $100 million in the 2014 election cycle to help Democratic candidates who oppose the Keystone pipeline and who favor green energy over fossil fuels. Steyer claims to be a man of principle who has no financial interest in the causes he supports, but acts only for the public good. That is a ridiculous claim: Steyer is the ultimate rent-seeker who depends on government connections to produce subsidies and mandates that make his green energy investments profitable. He also is, or was until recently, a major investor in Kinder Morgan, which is building a competitor to the Keystone pipeline. Go here, here, here, here, here and here for more information about how Steyer uses his political donations and consequent connections to enhance his already vast fortune.

But Steyers hypocrisy goes still deeper. Today, he is a bitter opponent of fossil fuels, especially coal. That fits with his current economic interests: banning coal-fired power plants will boost the value of his solar projects. But it was not always thus. In fact, Steyer owes his fortune in large part to the fact that he has been one of the worlds largest financers of coal projects. Tom Steyer was for coal before he was against it.

In his recent letter to the Middlebury College and Brown University Boards of Trustees, investment professional Mr. Steyer wrote:

I believe a coal free portfolio is a good investment strategy4

Tom Steyer: Call It Quits Already

Take a seat, Tom Steyer. Preferably one off the presidential campaign stage, and at your house. Last week marked one year until the 2020 election. Its the countdown to November, and there simply isnt time for Quixotic quests or immoderate indulgences. This upcoming election is serious business, and you are muddying up the waters.

I havent always felt this way. I was intrigued when you first popped up in political ads two years ago, calling for the impeachment of the president through your organization Need to Impeach. Plenty of other people thought you were a bit kooky. Doesnt matter. With an unlimited budget, youve been able to continue to push your point, stumping in many states and in an onslaught of ever-changing TV ads. Back in July, Politico reported that your TV advertising campaign was the single largest television ad buy among all Democrats.

But Im frustrated that you are taking debate time away time from candidates who are running real campaigns. So annoyed, I cant watch your ads anymore because I keep thinking about the myriad grassroots efforts that could use an infusion of cash.

Commission On Presidential Debates Announces Dates And Venues For 2020

WASHINGTON The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Friday its dates and venues of three general election presidential debates and one vice presidential debate.

The first presidential debate will be held on Sept. 29, 2020 at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. That will be followed by the second debate on Oct. 15 at the University of Michigan, and the third on Oct. 22 at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn.

The vice presidential debate will be held on Oct. 2 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

The Commission on Presidential Debates is a nonpartisan organization that has produced all general election debates since 1987.

According to the CPD, in order to be participate in the debates, candidates “must appear on a sufficient number of state ballots to have a mathematical chance of winning a majority vote in the Electoral College, and have a level of support of at least 15 percent of the national electorate as determined by five selected national public opinion polling organizations, using the average of those organizations most recently publicly-reported results at the time of the determination.”

The CPD has not yet announced which polling organizations will be accepted, but the organization stated it will announce who will be participating in the first presidential debate after Labor Day in 2020.

What We Know About Cesar Sayoc The Florida Man Suspected Of Mailing More Than A Dozen Bombs

The Florida man arrested Friday and expected to be charged in connection with the mailing of more than a dozen bomb-like devices to prominent Democrats around the country has a criminal record, including a felony charge in 2002 for threatening to throw, project, place, or discharge any destructive device.

Cesar Altieri Sayoc, 56, a registered Republican from South Florida, was born in Brooklyn, New York, but moved to Florida as a child, records show. He’s a 1980 graduate of North Miami Beach High School whose last known address was Aventura in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Sayoc has been identified by law enforcement authorities as being responsible for the mailings of bomb-like devices to top Democrats, including former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, according to an FBI complaint released Friday afternoon.

The latest package, found Friday, was addressed to liberal billionaire activist Tom Steyer who has spent millions calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. In a statement, Steyer confirmed the packaged mailed to him was intercepted at a mail facility in Burlingame, California.

Sayoc has been charged with five federal counts, including interstate transport of explosives, and faces a maximum 48 years in prison if convicted.

Sayoc was arrested Friday morning in Plantation, Florida, near an auto store.

Here’s what we know about him:

Mayor Bloomberg In Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

Do you see the glass as half-full or half-empty? If you see the glass as half-full you are probably an optimistic person and have tendencies of becoming an entrepreneur. True entrepreneurs do not see a stigma associated with bankruptcy. In fact, most entrepreneurs have difficult times along their path to success. Aside from various musicians such as Run DMC and Wayne Newton many business gurus such as Donald Trump and Walt Disney have been involved in bankruptcy. At the end of the day bankruptcy is simply a business decision to deal with debts and move forward.

For those of you unfamiliar with Chapter 7 bankruptcy it is also called liquidation bankruptcy. In Chapter 7 proceedings a trustee is appointed to administer the debtors estate . Each debtor is entitled to exemptions protecting assets he or she owns. If the assets are worth more than the exemptions some of the assets may be sold to pay off a portion of the debtors debt.

If Mayor Bloomberg were to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy he would remain a rich man and probably view the bankruptcy process as a way to pay off all of his debts. Forbes Magazine estimates that as of March 2013 his net worth was approximately 27 billion dollars. So presumably, if he were to file for chapter 7 bankruptcy a trustee would liquidate some of his assets and pay off all of his debts and leave him debt free with 27 billion dollars. Not bad for coming out of bankruptcy!

Tom Steyer Defends Impeachment Push On The View Discusses 2020 Presidential Bid

The billionaire activist pledged to spend $100 million on his presidential bid.

Tom Steyer: ‘We have a government that can’t get anything done’

Tom Steyer, the liberal billionaire activist who launched a presidential bid last month despite previously saying he would not run, joined ABC’s “The View” Thursday to discuss his path to the Democratic nomination and the best way to defeat President Trump.

Steyer also reacted to the latest round of Democratic primary debates, making clear that while he would support any of the candidates over Trump, he still believes the party is not dealing with the issue of corporate influence on American politics.

“To me, the biggest question in America is the corporate takeover of our government,” Steyer said. “We have a government that can’t get anything done. Because corporations have bought it.”

Steyer has spent the better half of the last two years pushing Democratic leaders in Congress to pursue impeachment proceedings against Trump, spending tens of millions of dollars on a pressure campaign.

Despite the hesitation by Democratic leaders in Congress and tepid support in most polls, the candidate defended his position on impeachment Thursday.

When pressed on fate of possible impeachment push in the Senate, Steyer said, “If enough constituents in those districts decide that it’s absolutely imperative to get rid of the president, I think all the senators will discover that it’s absolutely imperative.”

Andrew Yang Explains Why Digital Data Is Personal Property

FILE

The idea, he argues, would benefit companies because if users were compensated for their data from jogging routes to dining preferences then they would provide more information. The burden would then be on companies to share with each user how they are using, reselling and profiting from that data.

Right now technology companies are selling and reselling our data and we’re none the wiser, said Yang. We’re seeing none of that value. At this point, our data is worth more than oil. And if that’s the case, then we should be benefiting from it, not just the companies.

It’s our data, it’s our value, it’s our property and getting us a share of that value will be an immense game changer for many, many Americans, he added. It’s not just about the money though, it’s about the control, it’s about the autonomy, it’s about the agency. It’s our data, we should know what’s happening to it, and we should be able to change our preferences.

Yang views this data dividend as a supplement to or part of his signature proposal, the freedom dividend, in which the government would pay each adult citizen $1,000 a month.

Asked what his idea would look like in practice, with companies like Facebook paying users for information shared, Yang said thats the fun part.

We have to find out how they’re monetizing our information and then get a fair share of that, he said. Right now it’s difficult to determine precisely because we don’t know what they’re doing with our information.

He Has An Extensive Criminal Record:

Online records show that Sayoc has a string of arrest records that date back to 1991 for alleged theft and drug offenses, along with traffic infractions. As recently as May 2015, he was arrested in Palm Beach for an alleged retail theft. He was found guilty in October 2015, the records show.

In 2002, according to online court records from Miami-Dade County, Sayoc was charged with threatening to throw, project, place, or discharge any destructive device. The records don’t detail the specific circumstances of the incident but a destructive device is described in the statute as a bomb, grenade, mine, rock, missile, pipebomb or similar device. Sayoc eventually was placed on one-year probation for the second-degree felony.

Sayoc also was arrested in February 2004 on four counts of possession and sale of steroids, according to Broward County Court records. The charges were all dismissed in August 2005 after he had been sentenced to an 18-month probation on two counts of possession and unlawful use of a drivers license.

Daniel Lurvey, a Miami-Dade defense attorney, represented Sayoc in two theft cases in 2013 and 2014. He described Sayoc as a pretty normal guy who didn’t seem the type to mail suspected pipe bombs.
