St Cloud Diocese Files For Bankruptcy Following Settlement

Doug Weimerskrich

CORRECTION: The St. Cloud Diocese originally filed for bankruptcy in June. The Associated Press erroneously distributed this original news report Tuesday morning.

ST. CLOUD The Diocese of St. Cloud has filed for bankruptcy after reaching a $22.5 million settlement with clergy abuse survivors.

The diocese announced its plans to file for bankruptcy in 2018 to pay for claims dating back to the 1950s filed by 70 people against 42 priests. It announced the $22.5 million amount May 26 in a tentative agreement.

After lengthy negotiations with attorneys, the diocese filed for Chapter 11 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court Monday.

In 2014, the diocese released a list of 33 priests assigned to the Diocese of St. Cloud who were identified as likely to have abused minors.

The list has grown to more than 40, according to Jeff Anderson & Associates PA. Under the proposed agreement, the files of all 42 clergy will be made public.

Its been a long haul, a long process, for survivors, survivors attorney Mike Finnegan told the Star Tribune. Were glad that theyre on the path to resolution and putting the lawsuits behind them.

The $22.5 million settlement will be administered by an independent trustee appointed by the bankruptcy court, with input from a committee representing the survivors, the Star Tribune reported.

The settlement funding includes insurance and benefits coverage, cash and property from the diocese, and contributions from parishes.

Why Are People Denied Social Security Disability

There are many reasons that a person may be denied Social Security Disability. Whether there simply wasnt enough medical evidence to show the Social Security Administration that you are unable to work, or the SSA failed to consider all factors impacting your ability to work, getting approved may be as simple as appealing the decision.

There are some red flags, however, that will almost always result in a denial from the SSA that you should be aware of. Use of drugs or alcohol and any convictions, if related to your condition, could result in immediate denial. If your condition isnt likely to last longer than 12 months, it will be denied as well.

To determine what factors, if any, could get in the way of approval, it is best to speak with an attorney to discuss your case.
