On Sunday, 29 March 2020 at 2:00am clocks were turned forward one hour to 3:00am, the begin of daylight saving time. Germany will be back to the “normal” MEZ on 25 October 2020.Although it is sometimes hard to get to sleep 1 hour earlier in the first week of DST , I am looking forward to the long bright evenings during summer.

But not all physicists are ready to demote time to second-class status.

John Polkinghorne, a quantum physicist and Anglican priest, believes that the flow and direction of time are real and relentless. It is a “mistaken argument,” he said, to use relativity to assert that time is an illusion, “because no observer has knowledge of a distant event, or the simultaneity of different events, until they are unambiguously in that observer’s past. And, therefore, that argument focuses on the way observers organize their description of the past and cannot establish the reality of the awaiting future.”

Polkinghorne rejects the notion of the static block universe of space and time together. “We live in a world of unfolding and becoming,” he said.

Fotini Markopoulou-Kalamara, a theoretical physicist at the Perimeter Institute, said, “I have the distressing experience of physicists telling me that time is not real. It confuses me, because time seems to be real. Things happen. When I clap my hands, it happened. I would prefer to say that general relativity is not the final theory than to say that time does not exist.”

When daylight saving time starts in March, we set the clock one hourforward, and lose one hour sleep that night. Of course, we get the hourback in October, when the clock is set one hour back, and daylightsaving ends.

All six of the New England states in the northeastern U.S., currently in the Eastern Time Zone , have considered legislation to shift to UTC04:00, equivalent to Atlantic Standard Time or Eastern Daylight Time. Virtually all of this region is west of the theoretical western border of the zone at 67.5°W only a small portion of Maine lies east of that meridian. A Massachusetts commission concluded in 2017 that the benefits of changing to Atlantic Standard Time year-round would outweigh the disadvantages, provided that a majority of northeastern states make the same change. In May 2017, the Maine Senate approved a change to AST, on the condition that there would be a referendum, and that Massachusetts and New Hampshire decided to make the same switch. Also in 2017, the New Hampshire House of Representatives approved a bill in favor of a regional change, but this was voted down by the state’s Senate. Similar bills have been put forward in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

In 2018, Florida enacted into law the “Sunshine Protection Act”, under which the state would observe daylight saving time year-round. Most of the state would permanently keep Eastern Daylight Time, which is equivalent to Atlantic Standard Time the state’s panhandle region would move to year-round Central Daylight Time / Eastern Standard Time.
